Aug 24, 2012· The government has taken a series of steps to improve working conditions in the mining industry. In fact, the number of fatalities in South African mines dropped from 774 in 1984 to 128 in 2010. The turning point was the reform of the country''s mining legislation.

Accidents are caused by the result of unsafe acts or practices (the human element that results from poor attitudes, physical conditions and lack of knowledge or skills to enable one to work safely). They are also caused by the result of unsafe conditions of equipment or materials.

In the public sector, the minimum wages are determined by the Civil Service Commission and the Government. Thus, ultimately, there exists two different systems of collective bargaining (CB) and wage determination in Zimbabwe, one for the public sector and the other for private sector as shall be discussed in this paper.

The Mines and Minerals Act Chapter 21:05 is the law for the mining industry in Zimbabwe. There are other Acts and Regulations that draw their existence from this Mines and Minerals Act. The Act has been acknowledged as a good piece of legislation by both local and international investors.
